A LITTLE HISTORY...

What would history be without great men to write it? Galileo’s innovative discoveries established him as the engineer of the pendulum clock and the founding father of modern astronomy.

Avant-garde and rich in history, Gentlemaan wanted to capture its sense of exploration and visionary spirit in a unique, poetic timepiece.

TIME MEASUREMENT

At just 19, Galileo discovered the law of isochronism of motion by observing the regular oscillations of the chandeliers in Pisa Cathedral. This breakthrough marked the beginning of Galilean mechanics... Although he concentrated on astronomy for most of his life, in his old age he devised a plan for a clock, which he did not manage to complete before his death in 1642. It was not until 1657 that Christiaan Huygens and Salomon Coster built the first pendulum clock based on the work of the Tuscan scientist, revolutionising time measurement by reducing the margin of error from several minutes to only few seconds a day.

Galileo revolutionised science with a number of inventions, including the telescope in 1609, which he used to observe the phases of the Moon and thus kick-start our modern exploration of the universe... It was not until a century later that James Bradley proved that the Earth does indeed revolve around the Sun...
