Mechanical watches require greater attention than quartz or digital watches. Complex and delicate, they interlock dozens or even hundreds of mechanical parts, making the mechanism sensitive and vulnerable to damage. So it’s better to learn the right reflexes and take care of your watch with a few simple gestures.
Understanding how your watch works will help you make it your own, and knowing how to look after it will extend its life.
UNDERSTAND HOW THE AUTOMATIC MECHANISM WORKS
The automatic watch mechanism exploits the wearer’s movements. When the arm is in motion, a rotor is activated, sending kinetic energy through a series of gears to the mainspring. A spring which, when tightly wound by the winding process, unwinds, powering the watch movement autonomously until the power reserve is exhausted.
GOOD TO KNOW...
Your mechanical watch can be wound both manually and automatically.
→ To wind it up manually:
01 – Press the crown
Make sure that the crown is firmly seated so that the spring can be engaged.
02 – Gently turn the crown clockwise
Turn the crown clockwise about 20 turns to feed the mechanism’s power reserve. You’ll hear the cogs at work.
Do not force the spring in case of resistance, as this could damage your watch.
03 – Repeat if mechanism has stopped
Fully wound, our watches run for around 42 hours without being worn. If you have left the watch untouched for a longer time and the mechanism has exhausted its power reserve, repeat steps 1 and 2, then readjust the time.
→ To wind it up automatically:
The mechanism is wound by the force of your wrist movements, which feed the power reserve by rotating the oscillating weight. All you have to do is wearing.
Set the time on your watch by manipulating the crown in the classic way.
01 – Pull on the crown
Gently pull the crown out of its initial position until you hear an audible “click”.
02 – Turning the crown
Turn the crown to the desired hand position. Preferably, turn the hands clockwise.
03 – Press the crown
Once the hands are in the desired position, press firmly on the crown to return it to its original position.
Tip: Do not set the time and/or wind the mechanism while wearing the watch directly on your wrist, as this could cause the stem to come off its axis and accelerate wear on the crown.
Remove the watch to carry out this type of operation.
The mechanism of your watch is equipped with a date complication that allows you to have the day’s date in the month in addition to the time.
01 – Identify the button
The date button is inlaid in the case, above the crown.
02 – Using a fine tool
To press the button, choose a fine, non-scratching tool, to avoid marking your case.
03 – Press as many times as necessary
Each press changes the date by one day. Press as many times as necessary to reach the desired date, taking care to validate each turn.
Tip: In watchmaking, the ‘death zone’ located between 9pm and 3am refers to the interval of time when the date mechanism goes into full action. Manipulating the crown during this period can, by repetition, disrupt the transition and damage the wheels and components responsible for the date-change mechanism. It is therefore recommended not to adjust the date or time during this period to avoid damage to the movement.
GOOD TO KNOW...
Adjust the strap to your size, so that your watch fits snugly around your wrist.
01 – Release the adjustment latch
At the end of the butterfly clasp, locate the buckle and lift the safety catch with your finger.
02 – Move the bracelet to the desired size.
Move the loop lengthwise to the notch corresponding to the desired tightening.
03 – Engage safety
When the desired length is reached, press the safety catch, with the buckle stem facing the notch on the bracelet. An audible click ensures that the fastener is secure.
Elegant and discreet, the butterfly clasp ensures that your watch stays securely in place thanks to its double locking system.
01 – To open : Simultaneously press
Place both fingers on the side press buttons of the clasp and press simultaneously to disengage the safety catch. The clasp will then open on both sides.
02 – To close (1/2) : Fold in both sides
Fold the ends of the clasp towards the center, from the outside to the inside of the bracelet.
03 – To close (2/2) : Press firmly
Once the ends are in the center of the clasp, press firmly until an audible click indicates that the safety catch is engaged.
Thanks to Gentlemaan’s simple system, this operation takes just a few seconds.
01 – Locate the sliding rod
Turn the watch over and locate the sliding pin at each end of the bracelet.
02 – Press firmly
To disengage, press firmly on the latch along the length of the clamp.
03 – Align the new fastener
With the new bracelet, adjust the attachment bar in the dedicated slot visible in the case lugs. Release and an audible click will ensure the fastener is secure.
